AZ Strip Offroading Trip

Random Old Man…

Yesterday I went shopping with Devon, my roommate.  One of our stops was at Lowe’s to buy some propane for my grill.  As we were walking out of the store we hear someone say, “Come here!”.  I looked and it was a really old man sitting in the passenger side of a large Buick in an handicapped parking spot.  I called back, “What?”.  He said, “Come here!”, again so we walked over to the drivers side window and he said, “Can you come around to the other side?”.  So we did and this is the conversation that followed starting with the old man:

“You brothers?”

“No.”

“You friends?”

“Yep.”

“Serve missions?”

“Yep.”

“Where?”

“Dallas.”  ”Singapore.”

“All the way down there?”

“Yep.”

“Got wives?”

“Nope, not yet.”

“Well, you should get some.  They’re important.”

“We’re working on it.”

“My wive and I adopted 8 kids.  4 from Boise, 4 from Costa Rica.”

Devon- “I’m from Boise.”

“Got money?”

“HUH?”

“I have these papers here and am selling them to help out the family.  Do you have money?” (We see he has packets of papers stapled together with “…JOKES…” in the title. He hands us each a copy.)

Devon: “I don’t have any cash.” (The old man takes his paper back and I hand him my paper too.)

Me: “Yeah.”

“Got a$10?”

“No.”

“Got a $5?”

“No?”

“What do you have?”

“A couple of $1s.”

“Uh, I guess that’ll do.”  (I give him $2.)  ”Is this really $2?”

“Yep.”

“Hmm.  Ok.”  (He starts to hand me a packet of papers again.)

“That’s fine, I’ll pass on the paper and just donate to the cause.  Bye.”

Sometimes Provo/Orem has the oddest people to talk to.

Updated Travel Plans

So, as of right now, I have no travel plans.  Sad.  When I last posted I was so optimistic that I would have plans and a ticket to somewhere by now.  I guess it just didn’t work out.  But it’s not as if I haven’t been busy with other things.  I took a trip to California for my nephew’s wedding.  That was a nice little trip and it was really fun to see family.  But that isn’t the kind of trip that I first posted about.  I have also been taking spring semester classes here at BYU.  If I miss more than one day of these classes it’s as if I missed 2 or 3 fall/winter semester classes.  Gladly, that ends this week and all I have is work.  So, there is still a chance that I can take my trip to…

where ever I want to go.

Poll

When you came to this blog and saw that it says “Brian’s Travel Record”, you probably thought to yourself, “Brian travels?”  Well, that thought is mostly accurate.  The most common trip that I take is up and down the I-15, to and from BYU in Utah.  I have been to Florida to visit cousins and Alabama to attend Space Camp and, of course, Texas as a missionary.

However, I recently had somewhat of an epiphany that this time of my life is probably the best time for me to do any sort of traveling and sightseeing.  So started the planning and dreaming.  Because I haven’t traveled much and don’t have much money, I want to start off by traveling to domestic or close foreign destinations.  Right now I am leaning mostly toward the LDS Church History tour for multiple reasons.  First, I like church history and have never been to some of the most important church sites such as the Sacred Grove, Fayette, Kirtland, and Nauvoo.  Second, this trip (and the US History tour) would be great for developing traveling skills and getting accustomed to life on the road.  I plan on doing ECONOMY trips by taking trains, walking a lot, and staying in hostels and YMCAs.  I have included a poll so that I can get suggestions as to where others have been and would recommend.  Please vote!
